Alyson Barnes, PhD, is currently serving as the Assistant Editor for The American Journal of Human Genetics at the American Society of Human Genetics, starting in August 2023. Prior to this role, Alyson worked as a Scientist in Functional Genomics at Variant Bio, where responsibilities included leading projects on pre-clinical targets and executing pooled genome-wide CRISPR screens. Experience at Duke University encompassed two positions: Associate Programming Director for the Duke Project Management Community of Practice, organizing educational programs, and Graduate Student Researcher, focusing on the molecular mechanisms related to Chlamydia-induced cytokines under the guidance of Dr. Furthermore, Alyson was an Undergraduate Student Researcher at the University of Virginia, studying the mechanism of Ebola inhibitors, and completed a research internship at the National Institutes of Health, analyzing data from an anti-Ebola vaccine trial. Educational qualifications include a PhD in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology from Duke University and a Bachelor's degree with distinction in Biology and Philosophy from the University of Virginia.

The Society’s nearly 8,000 members include researchers, academicians, clinicians, laboratory practice professionals, genetic counselors, nurses and others who have a special interest in the field of human genetics.
