Germaine Yong has a diverse work experience. Germaine is currently working as Chief Microbiome Scientist (Food) at AMILI since 2022. Prior to this, they were a Research Fellow at Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation from 2021. From 2015 to 2021, they were a PhD Candidate at University of California, San Francisco where they led a multi-site birth cohort study investigating the role of early-life gut microbiome in childhood obesity. Germaine also analyzed longitudinal bacterial and fungal gut communities using high throughput methods, shotgun metagenomics, metabolomics and transcriptomics. Additionally, they investigated the functional impacts of diet-microbiome interactions on host physiology and metabolism. From 2015 to 2014, they worked as a Research Officer at Singapore Institute of Clinical Sciences. From 2014 to 2013, they were a Research Officer at Singapore Immunology Network where they developed methods to determine the in vivo growth rate of Candida albicans fungi and investigated the inhibitory effects of acetic acid on Candida albicans growth. From 2013 to 2013, they were an Undergraduate Researcher at Duke University Medical Center and Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment.
Germaine Yong began their educational journey in 2009 when they obtained their GCE Advanced Levels from Raffles Institution. Germaine then went on to attend Duke University from 2011 to 2014, where they earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. In 2014, they obtained a Certificate from the Baking Industry Training College in Baking Principles. Finally, they graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences from the University of California, San Francisco in 2020.
