Matthew Montgomery has a diverse work experience. Matthew began their career in 2012 as a Head Lifeguard for the Town of Mayfield. In 2014, they worked as a Lifeguard for the YMCA, where they were responsible for opening the pool and enforcing pool rules, as well as instructing swimming lessons for youth. In 2015, they were a Chemical Engineering Research Intern for the REU at Penn State, where they used a genetic algorithm to develop RNA-based sensors for detecting small molecules. From 2016 to 2021, they worked at Yale University as a Postdoctoral Researcher and Graduate Student. Matthew's research focused on the influence of pressure on the magnetic properties of 2D materials, and they gained extensive experience with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and implementing diamond anvil cells. Matthew also gained experience with various exfoliation techniques, and separation procedures for isolating small nanomaterials from solution. In 2019, they worked as a Materials Engineer for Obsidian Advanced Manufacturing LLC. Currently, they are a Senior Combustion Engineer and Combustion Engineer for Amogy.

Matthew Montgomery began their educational journey in 2008 when they graduated from Mayfield Central High School in Mayfield, NY with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors. From 2012 to 2016, they attended Vassar College and earned a dual-major in Biochemistry and Mathematics. In 2016, they began their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Chemical Engineering at Yale University and completed their studies in 2021.
