About Ampd Energy

At Ampd Energy, we believe in making a zero-emission future for many industries a reality. Founded in 2014, Ampd Energy develops robust, versatile, advanced, compact, and connected battery energy storage systems (BESS) to replace the dirty, noisy, and hazardous diesel generators that power job sites in industries such as construction, civil works, mining, events, film, and utilities.

Ampd Energy is a mission and values-driven company with a diverse, high-performing global team supported by visionary customers who all want to make a difference. We are poised for significant expansion and seek dynamic, passionate team members to help propel our growth.

The VP, Engineering will play a critical role in driving the development of next-generation product and new product lines at Ampd Energy. This member of our executive leadership team will oversee the integrated Engineering department and lead the scoping, development, and implementation of product requirements from the Product Management department. This role requires an individual to have the core tenets of organizational leadership (driving focus and prioritization, creating clarity and making decisions amid imperfect information, nurturing and empowering leaders in functional teams and strong collaboration across other organizational departments); a strong technical background in energy systems; a passion for the energy transition; and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

What You'd Do

  • Team Management. Manage, mentor and guide a team of engineers, fostering their professional growth and enable them to deliver exceptional results.
  • Technical Leadership. Provide strong technical leadership and guidance to the Engineering team, fostering a culture of focus, collaboration, and decision-making. Drive the end-to-end product development process: provide inputs during the conceptualization of requirements, develop the requirements into a product through a stage-gate process and transition the finished product to Operations and Quality to bring to scale.
  • Scalable Systems and Processes. Develop and implement scalable systems and processes to ensure alignment of RASCIs within your team and across other organizational departments; to enable tracking of progress of project deliverables; so that your team has a clear understanding of your expectations of their performance and ultimately, how they are tracking against your expectations.
  • Technology Evaluation. Keep abreast of the latest advancements in technologies and identify opportunities to implement such technologies to advance the state of the art of Ampd’s products, given product requirements.
  • Supporting Service. Support the Field Service department in addressing more complex issues which require guidance and expertise from the Engineering department. Design scalable training systems (documentation, SOPs, training programs) when new products or new product features are released, or just generally to help the Service teams ‘level-up’, in order to reduce their reliance on the Engineering teams.
  • Risk Management. Identify risks early and bring a mindset of mitigating such risks early through any program, be that design and development or transfer to operations or hiring.
  • Budgeting and Resource Allocation. Work closely with the executive team to define Engineering budgets, allocate resources effectively, and optimize costs without compromising quality.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration. You will collaborate most closely with Product Management to define, then implement product requirements for product development/improvement programs; with Operations to source for new component and subsystem vendors, to manage and build existing vendor relationships and ensure a smooth transition to operationalization of engineering projects; with Quality to incorporate quality as early as possible in the engineering process; and with Service to ensure existing products are functioning as intended and understand failure Paretos so that they can be addressed systematically.

Who You Are

  • Education. A degree in Mechanical or Electronic or Electrical or Computer or System Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience. Minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership or managerial (Director level or higher) role.
  • Battery Energy Storage System. Proven experience in the design, development, and manufacturing of battery energy storage systems (ESSs). ESSs are also becoming increasingly regulated, so proven experience having to deliver products or projects against in the compliance, certification and testing frameworks for ESSs is highly desirable.
  • Collaboration and Communication. Communication is the bedrock of strong teamwork, managing expectations, coaching and development, motivating others and providing clarity. You are an excellent communicator who can bring out the best in others in respect of communication. This includes knowing how to disagree or make a point firmly, but respectfully.
  • Team Development. Demonstrated experience building, managing and nurturing an Engineering team across multiple disciplines, including identifying, attracting and developing top engineering talent.
  • Problem-solving and Analytical Thinking. Strong analytical skills and the ability to solve complex technical challenges, make data-driven decisions, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Scale-up Mindset. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with tight deadlines. Champion a mindset of quality and “getting things right the first time”. Ensure issues are addressed not just in that immediate moment, but also develop, implement and scale processes and systems to ensure the same issue and similar such issues are not repeated.
