Kyunghwan Choi

Head of Engineering at Amplify Life Insurance

Kyunghwan Choi is the current head of engineering at Amplify Life Insurance. Prior to this, they were a software engineering manager at Amazon Web Services from May 2016 to April 2019. There, they supervised a team of 11 software engineers to develop features for on-device runtime. Kyunghwan also established software engineers’ career goals, set key performance metrics, and conducted performance evaluations. In addition, they orchestrated releases for Greengrass SDKs in Java, C, and Node.js, and other key features such as binary data support, message queuing, and configurable reconnection. Furthermore, they managed large-scale backend capacity planning to onboard 1M+ edge IoT devices onto the Greengrass platform. From April 2019 to December 2021, they were a software engineering manager at Amazon on the Alexa Health ML team. There, they led a team of 8 software engineers and data scientists. Kyunghwan also conducted bi-weekly sprint planning and retrospectives to set deliverable priorities and deadlines. In addition, they guided engineers through in-depth engineering design and security reviews. Moreover, they drove cross-collaboration with dependency teams to ensure timely upstream deliverables completion. Finally, they collaborated with product managers to assess and refine feature requirements.

Kyunghwan Choi has a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Kyunghwan also has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Kyunghwan is certified from Microsoft in Programming in HTML5 with JavaScript and CSS3 Specialist.
