Dermot Tierney has a diverse range of work experience in various roles throughout their career. Dermot currently holds the position of Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) at AMPLY Discovery since August 2022. Prior to this, they worked as a Director at AMPLY Discovery starting in February 2021.
From August 2021 to August 2022, Dermot worked at Queen's University Belfast, first as the Head of IP & Commercialisation and then as the Intellectual Property & Licensing Manager. In these roles, they collaborated with researchers to develop and commercialize intellectual property (IP) through licensing new products and technologies to commercial companies or creating new spin-out companies.
Before joining Queen's University Belfast, Dermot worked at the Dublin Institute of Technology. From January 2013 to December 2015, they served as the Senior Licensing Manager at the Technology Transfer Office. Dermot also worked as the Technology Transfer Case Manager from September 2011 to June 2015, where they identified invention disclosures, developed commercialization strategies, evaluated IP, market projections, and business plans, and managed commercial partnerships. Additionally, Dermot served as the Hothouse Venture Programme Manager from October 2010 to September 2011, responsible for managing a comprehensive support and incubation program for graduate entrepreneurs with technology-based business ideas.
Dermot has also ventured into entrepreneurship, as they founded EncryptMyDoc in October 2013, a company that focuses on document encryption. Dermot also served as a Non-Exec at getbulb.com, an Irish software start-up that specializes in infographics software.
Earlier in their career, Dermot worked as the Brand Manager of Innovation Magazine at The Irish Times, where they managed the commercial aspects of the monthly business magazine and developed partnerships with leading companies. Dermot also held the role of Publishing and Sales Manager at Special Reports and Senior Account Manager - UK & International Markets at The Irish Times London.

Dermot Tierney has a diverse education history. In 1997, they attended Ulster University where they pursued a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Humanities, completing their studies in 2001. Later, in 2002, they enrolled at the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) to pursue a Diploma in Management as part of the Premiere Graduate Management Programme, which they completed in 2003. In 2008, Dermot attended the University College Dublin, where they pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, which they completed in 2010. Finally, in 2015, Dermot joined the UCL to obtain a Certificate in IP Transactions in the field of Intellectual Property Law.
