Julie Yip

Cofounder & Lead Engineer at Ananya Health

Julie Yip has over five years of work experience in engineering and project management. In 2020, they became the Cofounder, Engineer & Project Manager at Ananya Health. Prior to that, they were an R&D Engineer at Theranova, LLC from 2019-2020, where they designed mechanical prototypes, completed benchtop testing, and led documentation and design transfer to manufacturing for a reusable N95 respirator during the Covid-19 pandemic. Julie also supported development and assembly for 7 medical devices in their two years at the incubator. From 2019-2020, they were an R&D Engineer at Child Health Innovations, where they managed device testing and documentation for a silicone breastfeeding device for babies with cleft, and supported design and fabrication of products. Julie was also a Chemistry/Production Intern at Prellis Biologics, Inc. from 2019, where they developed bioinks and explored new formulations with varying parameters, and supported 3D bioprinting of different tissue structures for R&D and production. From 2018-2019, they were a Research Project Assistant at the University of California, San Diego - School of Medicine, where they led qualitative analysis on research exploring the rise of congenital syphilis in the US, in collaboration with the March of Dimes, and supported study design, grant writing, and recruitment for violence prevention at three UC campuses, called UC Speaks Up. From 2017-2018, they were the Cofounder, Student Entrepreneur at Hapty Hearts, where they devised a device that would connect new mothers with their babies, via the touch of a heartbeat, managed user testing with mothers and partnerships with health organizations, specialized their branding, and raised funding via pitches and grants. In 2016, they were an Undergraduate Researcher at the Cartilage Tissue Engineering Lab at the University of California, San Diego - Jacobs School of Engineering. From 2017-2018, they were a Product Development Engineering Intern at Quidel, where they prototyped a concentrator device for Strep A lateral flow immunoassays and reduced assembly time by almost 50 percent, and designed new components and fixtures using Solidworks and conducted statistical analyses for validation. From 2015-2016, they were the Vice President at UC San Diego Chapter of Engineering World Health. Julie was also a Marketing and Communications Intern at the University of California, San Diego - Jacobs School of Engineering from 2015-2016, where they covered student stories and social media campaigns for the engineering school, and ran the #ILookLikeAnEngineer campaign at UCSD, which included conducting student interviews, creating profiles, and posting on various social media.

Julie Yip obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering from UC San Diego between 2014 and 2018. In November 2021, they obtained their EPA Section 608 Certification Type 1 from Qwik Products by Mainstream Engineering.
