Dr Fiona Edwards Murphy, CEO and Co-Founder of ApisProtect is among the most widely published authors on Internet of Things and honey bees.

ApisProtect brings groundbreaking technology to commercial beekeeping. Using IoT (Internet of Things) technologies, she remotely extract data from hives. Through the use of AI (Artificial Intelligence), this data is converted into meaningful insight about operations, enabling beekeepers to deploy their labor and resources to maximum effect, creating an extra $100 of value per hive annually.

Dr Fiona Edwards Murphy was recognised by the Irish Technology Group as one of their 2020 Silicon Valley 50 Honorees and won the Silicon Valley Forum Women in Tech Pitch Competition 2020. She was recently listed by FoodTank as one of 15 Leading Women at the Intersection of Food and Technology in February 2021.

Dr Fiona Edwards Murphy was listed by Siliconrepublic.com as one of 100 rising science and technology stars to watch in 2020 and by ThinkBusiness.ie in its list of “24 disruptors and trailblazers changing Irish business”.

Dr Fiona Edwards Murphy has won many awards including the Rising Star Award at the Dublin Tech Summit, Women in Technology Awards, October 2019 and the Women Mean Business Sodexo Newcomer of the Year Award 2018.

ApisProtect was listed in the Sunday Business Post”100 Hot Startups” for 2019 and Dr Fiona Edwards Murphy was shortlisted in The Irish Times as one of the 50 people to watch in Ireland in 2019. She was listed as 15 trailblazing entrepreneurs to watch in 2019 by Silicon Republic.

Now monitoring the health of over twenty million honey bees in hives across Europe and North America, ApisProtect brings the power of advanced sensors and machine learning technology into the hive to deliver a 24/7 early warning system so beekeepers can give at-risk hives immediate attention and improve bee health.

Dr Fiona Edwards Murphy has presented her work at global AgTech and Beekeeping conferences to demonstrate this technology including Forbes Agtech Conference 2019, Salinas, California, World AgriTech Conference, London (2019) and Apimondia, Montreal, (2019).

Dr Edwards Murphy’s work on the topic of hive monitoring has received many national and international awards from the Irish Research Council, The IEEE, IBM, The Irish Laboratory Awards, Google, and the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. In 2016 she was the only Irish recipient of a Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship.

Dr Edwards Murphy completed her PhD with the School of Engineering, and the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at University College Cork in the area of Internet of Things applications for honey bee health. Fiona is a graduate of the Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (BE) Honours at UCC.
