Richard Pietroski has worked in the field of organ donation and transplant for nearly 40 years to improve methods, rates and healthcare systems leading to an increase in the number of organs for transplant. Through his work with hospitals, federal legislators, and policy makers the organ donor pool has been expanded upon through the implementation of new programs involving ex vivo organ perfusion technologies, safely transplanting organs from HIV – positive donors and expanded practices of deceased organ donation. He has served on, or chaired, several national committees and boards, including the federal Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients, the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations, and the American Board for Transplant Certification. In addition to his work with healthcare leaders in Canada, Japan, Poland, Spain and United Arab Emirates, he led the Lung Bioengineering Inc – United Therapeutics Corp team as president, and now as a retained consultant, to integrate ex vivo lung perfusion into routine healthcare transplant practice.
