Tom Nichols has a diverse work experience spanning several industries. Tom started their career as an Accountant at Synergy in 1984 before moving on to become the CFO at the World Wildlife Fund from 1987 to 2000. Tom then served as the Vice President for Operations/CFO at the African Wildlife Foundation from 2001 to 2008. From 2008 to 2013, they worked as the Vice President for Finance/CFO at The Heinz Center, an environmental organization. In 2010, Tom founded their own music company called Tom Nichols Music, LLC and served as a Singer/Songwriter, Producer, and Recording Engineer. Tom also worked as a Trustee at Netcentric Campaigns from 2010 to 2013. From 2014 to 2019, they held the positions of Vice President - Finance and Operations, and later Chief Operating Officer, at the Arcus Foundation. Tom also served on the Leadership Council at the Sitar Arts Center from 2017 to 2018 and worked as a Strategic Consultant at TWN Consulting from 2007 onwards.

Tom Nichols attended McLean High School from 1976 to 1979, where they did not receive a degree or specialize in any field of study. Following high school, they pursued higher education at Virginia Tech from 1979 to 1983, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business.
