John Atherton

John Atherton has extensive experience in legal roles within the private investment sector. Currently, John serves as Partner and General Counsel for Europe at Ares Management Corporation, a position held since February 2018, after progressing through various legal roles including Managing Director and Associate General Counsel for Europe, and Principal and Associate General Counsel for Credit. Prior to Ares Management, John was General Counsel for Private Investment Structures at Schroder Adveq from April 2015 to February 2018. Earlier in John's career, significant legal experience was gained at Proskauer Rose LLP as a Senior Associate focused on Private Investment Funds and at SJ Berwin as an Associate in Private Investment Funds, as well as completing a traineeship. John holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Bristol, obtained between 2001 and 2004, and received foundational education at Loughborough Grammar School from 1993 to 2000.
