Anne Burdick

Dr. Anne Burdick is interim provost of ArtCenter College of Design, overseeing the undergraduate and graduate educational departments; academic, faculty and student affairs; engagement programs with industry and academic partners; and ArtCenter Extension. Since she was named interim provost on July 1, 2022, Burdick has assumed all duties of the position along with full responsibility and authority of the office and will continue to serve in this capacity until a new provost is appointed.

Burdick is a designer, critic, educator, and researcher with a deep institutional knowledge of ArtCenter. She served as Chair of Graduate Media Design Practices (MDP) at ArtCenter from 2006–2018. During her time leading the department, MDP introduced new models for sponsored faculty-led research and initiated the Graduate Center for Critical Practice. The MDP MFA was recognized for its innovative curriculum, garnering the Core77 Award for Educational Initiatives in 2014.

Throughout her career, she taught students at all levels of design education, from first termers to doctoral students at both large universities and small private art colleges. To expand her understanding of design education, in 2019 she completed a Ph.D. in Design at Carnegie Mellon University.

From 2018–2021, Burdick served as Research Professor in Visual Communication Design in the School of Design at University of Technology, Sydney, where she co-founded the Knowledge Design Lab. At UTS, Burdick was active in mentoring faculty and building “non-traditional research” capacity.

Since leaving her post as Chair, Burdick has continued working as an adjunct professor at ArtCenter, teaching in both their MDP and Humanities & Sciences programs. In 2021, she returned to ArtCenter full-time and in addition to teaching, serves as the Interim Director of Academic Research, working with faculty teams on the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) Task Force and Graduate Writing Working Group which will lead to the launch of an Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Graduate Writing Center in the coming terms.

In her creative practice, Burdick designs experimental text projects in diverse media, for which she has garnered recognition, from winning the prestigious Leipzig Award for book design to a nomination for a Webby Award for her work with interactive texts and electronic literature. With Johanna Drucker, Peter Lunenfeld, Todd Pressner, and Jeffrey Schnapp, she is a co-author of the book Digital_Humanities, and her writing and design can be found in the Los Angeles Times, Eye Magazine, Émigré, and Electronic Book Review, among other publications. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Walker Art Gallery, SFMOMA, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
