Nick was raised on a 4th generation family farm in southeastern North Dakota, where he still makes time to help his father and brother harvest wheat, soybeans, and corn. From those farming roots, he launched a 10-year career in crop insurance and ag banking. As VP of Ag Insurance for Bremer Bank, he led a team that served farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses throughout North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota. During that time, he saw the growing direct and indirect impacts of climate change on the ag industry and family farms like that of his family, and decided it was time to leverage his farm background to try to make a difference at a systems scale. Nick went on to pursue his MBA at Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School with a focus on entrepreneurship. From there he joined Truterra, the sustainability business of Land O’Lakes, where he acted as Soil Health Services Lead, working with the soils team to design and launch one of the first and largest agricultural carbon programs in the US. Under his leadership, the program created unprecedented opportunity for farmers to market their environmental services, generating more than $4 million in cash payments to the farmers they served, supported by diverse revenue streams from an extensive multi-sector network including farmers, government stakeholders, NGOs, ag retailers, and Fortune 100 CPG companies.
