Bjarki Johannesson

Bjarki Johannesson is an accomplished scientist with extensive experience in the field of biomedical research and innovation. Currently serving as Director of Safety Innovation and Director of Imaging and Analytics at AstraZeneca since February 2021, Bjarki leads a highly-skilled team focused on advancing AI-based image analysis and imaging technologies. Prior to this, Bjarki held multiple roles at The New York Stem Cell Foundation Research Institute from April 2013 to September 2021, including Senior Research Investigator and NYSCF Investigator, where the focus was on deriving patient-specific stem cells and developing disease models. Earlier experience includes a postdoctoral fellowship at EMBL from November 2010 to February 2013, where research involved using mouse models to study autoimmune disease. Bjarki holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from EMBL, an MSc in Cell Biology, and a BSc in Biochemistry, both from Háskóli Íslands.
