Andrew Horchler

Chief Research Scientist at Astrobotic Technology

Andrew Horchler has a diverse work experience spanning over two decades. Andrew worked as a Principal Research Scientist at Astrobotic from July 2019 to the present. Prior to that, they held the role of Senior Research Scientist at Astrobotic from August 2016 to June 2019, where they contributed to the development of space robotics technology.

Before their time at Astrobotic, Horchler served as a Postdoctoral Robotics Researcher at Case Western Reserve University from April 2016 to July 2016. Andrew also worked as a Ph.D. Candidate in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the same university from April 2010 to March 2016.

Horchler gained valuable experience as an AFRL/DAGSI Fellow at the Air Force Research Laboratory from April 2008 to March 2011. During this time, they focused on creating dynamical models of insect brains and sensory systems, as well as developing computational neuroscience approaches for sensor fusion.

Andrew'swork in autonomous driving includes serving as the Vehicle Behavior Control Technical Lead for Team Case - DARPA Urban Challenge from May 2006 to March 2008. In this role, they developed autonomous driving behaviors, implemented trajectory planning and collision avoidance algorithms, and led the writing of technical reports and presentations.

Additionally, Horchler worked as a Graduate Student and an NSF IGERT Fellow at Case Western Reserve University from September 2000 to April 2006. Andrew also gained research experience as a NASA NJ Space Grant Consortium Research Fellow at Princeton University in June 2000.

Furthermore, they worked as a Research Intern at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in June 1999 and as a Research Intern and Princeton in France Fellow at Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées in June 1998.

Throughout their career, Horchler has demonstrated expertise in robotics, space technology, computational neuroscience, and autonomous driving.

Andrew Horchler completed their high school education at Southern Cayuga Central High School from 1992 to 1996. Andrew then attended Princeton University from 1996 to 2000, where they earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) in Mechanical Engineering. Andrew furthered their education at Case Western Reserve University from 2008 to 2016, obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering with a specialization in Robotics.
