Dr. Polycarpou received his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Following this he was a visiting Lecturer, then a post-doc before joining Seagate Technology. In 1999 he joined the facuity of the University of Ilinois, where he was the Wilkins Professor and the Associate Head for Undergraduate Programs in the Mechanical Science and Engineering Department until November 2012. In December 2012, he joined Texas A&M as the Department Head and the Kotzebue professor in Mechanical Engineering. He studies friction, adhesion, wear and the lubrication of interacting surfaces and is a recognized expert in this field. He has consulted with multiple companies in the compressors for refrigeration and air conditioning sub-segment and is a leading member of the Center for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning and the director of the Microtribodynamics and Tribology Laboratory at the University of linois and now at Texas A&M.
