James Petty

Head Of Asset Management & Strategy at Aurizon Holdings Ltd

James Petty has over 30 years of experience in asset management and strategy, primarily in the mining industry. James most recently served as the Head of Asset Management & Strategy at Aurizon, where they were responsible for managing a fleet of locomotives and wagons, including future strategy, asset management programs, and decarbonization efforts.

Prior to their role at Aurizon, Petty was the Director of iTi Solutions Pty Ltd, a boutique consulting business. In this position, they provided critical reviews of technology deployment programs and asset management programs for various businesses, offering independent advice and support for technology integration in the mining industry.

Petty also has a significant history with Rio Tinto Iron Ore, where they held several leadership roles. As the General Manager of Mine Fleet Maintenance & Technology, they oversaw the asset management strategies for a fleet of heavy and light mobile machines. James was also instrumental in the deployment of the first large fleet of autonomous haul trucks in Australia. In addition, Petty served as the General Manager of Mine of the Future, where they implemented Rio Tinto's Mine of the Future initiatives within the Iron Ore sector.

Earlier in their career, Petty held various maintenance management positions in both surface coal mining and the mining fleet at Rio Tinto. James introduced innovative asset management strategies that were widely adopted throughout the company.

James Petty completed their Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Mechanical Engineering from QUT (Queensland University of Technology) from 1983 to 1986. James then pursued a Graduate Diploma in Maintenance Management from Monash University from 1991 to 1992. In 2006 to 2007, James attended Duke University for the Business Leadership Development Program, focusing on Organizational Leadership. Additionally, James attended All Souls' & St Gabriels School in Charters Towers, Queensland from 1978 to 1982, but it is unclear if they obtained a degree during that time.
