John Heldreth has a diverse work experience in the automotive industry, starting with their current role as Car Security Operations at Volkswagen AG since October 2021. Prior to this, they founded ASRG - Automotive Security Research Group in 2017. In 2014, they joined Porsche Engineering Services GmbH, where they held multiple roles, including Project Manager / Head of Automotive Security Development from February 2017 to October 2021 and Project Manager from January 2014 to February 2017. Before that, they worked at Robert Bosch as a Technical Project Manager from September 2011 to December 2013 and as an Engineer responsible for hardware design and development of airbag ECU's from July 2005 to November 2011. John began their career at Delphi Automotive Systems as a Product Engineer, where they worked from June 2004 to July 2005, focusing on the production and integration of occupant classification systems.

John Heldreth obtained their Bachelor of Arts degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University between 1999 and 2005. Later on, they pursued a Master of Business Administration in Business Strategy from the German Graduate School of Management and Law (GGS) from 2015 to 2017.
