Justin Sech is a Machine Learning Specialist at Avalo, Inc. since August 2022, with previous experience as a Deep Learning Horticulture Intern at Signify. During the internship, Justin developed a multi-class UNET segmentation model for crop health monitoring and utilized Tensorboard to enhance model performance. Prior roles include Director of Communications and Speaker Liaison at TEDxJHU, where Justin managed TEDx talk development, mentoring speakers and teams. As a Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning Research Intern with the Dr. Mark Dredze Group and an AI Engineer Intern at SoKat.co, Justin focused on machine learning technologies, notably contributing to a project that won a Government Innovation Award. Teaching experience as a Computer Science Instructor at Juni Learning involved creating customized lesson plans for students aged 8-14. Justin holds a Master of Science in Engineering in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a minor in Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

Avalo is a plant biology company that harnesses interpretable machine learning, genomic discovery, and evolutionary theory to rapidly design new crops for the future of agriculture. Their process uses AI-assisted plant breeding, so all products are non-GMO and support the natural diversity of the world around us. The technological core of Avalo isa discovery engine that can identify the genetic underpinnings of complex traits with minimal training. In turn, these findings are leveraged into high-precision, low-cost simulations and forecasts. Even in understudied crops, Avalo can reduce the time that it takes to produce new crops by years and reduce the cost by an order of magnitude.
