Dr. John Carethers has served on the Board since July 2021. Dr. Carethers is the John G. Searle Professor and Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a position he has held since 2009. In addition, he was named the C. Richard Boland Distinguished University Professor in 2017 and is also a Professor of Human Genetics. Dr. Carethers was elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine in 2012 and became an elected fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2021. Previously, Dr. Carethers served in a variety of roles at the University of California San Diego, including as a Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology. Dr. Carethers holds an M.D., as well as a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences from Wayne State University, completing his internship and residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and his fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Carether’s senior leadership experience at a medical college and extensive research experience in familial cancer syndromes, including tumor genetics, DNA mismatch repair, and colorectal cancer disparities, along with his independence, make him a valuable member of our Board.
