Sean L. Jones

SEAN L. JONES is the Assistant Director for the Directorate of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the National Science Foundation. With over 13 years at the NSF, Dr. Jones has served as a program director for Centers, National Facilities, sustainability efforts and broadening participation initiatives. He also served as the Deputy for the Division of Materials Research as well as the Assistant Director for Physical Sciences and Engineering for the White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) during the Obama Administration.

Prior to joining NSF, Dr. Jones served as Senior Researcher at the University of Florida, Director of Engineering for Applied Plasmonics, Chair and Professor of Engineering at Norfolk State University, Senior Scientist at Luxcore Networks, and as Technical Manager and Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories of Lucent Technologies. He has authored numerous publications and has been awarded 9 U.S. patents.

Dr. Jones is a long-standing member of the AVS; serving previously as a Board Member, member of the PLC, lead for the Federal Funding Townhall, and co-chair for the Diversity Equity Inclusion and Access committee. Dr. Jones received his B.S. in Ceramic Engineering from Clemson University and his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Florida.
