Mahmudul Hasan

Mahmudul Hasan, Ph.D. has a diverse work experience in the field of environmental engineering. Mahmudul is currently the Chief Technical Officer at the Baltimore City Department of Public Works, where they are responsible for master planning resource recovery efforts and developing long-term technical strategies for sustainable water and wastewater treatment operations. Prior to this role, they served as the Biosolids and Resource Recovery Manager at the same department, overseeing resource recovery operations and leading the PFAS removal effort.

Aside from their work at the Baltimore Department of Public Works, Dr. Hasan has held various positions in different organizations. Mahmudul has served as the Chair of IWA YWP USA and has been a part of the YWP Management Committee of the IWA MIA Specialist Group on Modelling and Integrated Assessment. At The George Washington University, they were both a Course Instructor and a Doctoral Fellow, leading projects and research on micropollutant removal, microbial growth, and biofiltration efficiency improvement.

Prior to their academic work, Dr. Hasan gained experience as a Research Associate at DC Water, where they conducted research on sludge dewatering and emerging contaminants removal. Mahmudul also worked as a Project Engineer in the environmental sector at the Bureau of Research, Testing and Consultancy-BUET, where they contributed to national projects on environmental impact assessment and sanitation. Additionally, they briefly worked as a Project Engineer at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Mahmudul Hasan, Ph.D. has a strong educational background in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Mahmudul obtained their Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 2013. Mahmudul then pursued a Master's degree in the same field from the same university, completing it in 2015. Mahmudul went on to continue their studies at The George Washington University, where they earned a Master's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2017. Later, they completed their academic journey by obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Civil and Environmental Engineering from The George Washington University in 2022. Throughout their educational journey, Mahmudul also obtained additional certifications such as the Water Leadership Institute from the Water Environment Federation in 2021 and Engineers in Training certification from NCEES in 2017.
