Senior Media Planner at Barkley

Derek Nystrom has a diverse work experience spanning several companies and roles. Derek started their career as a Special Events, Fundraising, and Social Media Intern at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in 2016, where they identified and contacted corporate donor prospects and organized donations for local events. Derek then worked as a Fulfillment Associate at Amazon before moving on to a Public Relations Intern role at Des Moines Public Schools, where they created and presented a comprehensive PR tactical recommendation for maximizing awareness of the Farm to School grant program.

In 2016, Derek also interned at the Young Women's Resource Center, conducting research and creating a PR tactical recommendation for increasing advocacy and donor support. Derek also interned at the National Pork Board, conducting research and developing a national advertising campaign targeting millennials to raise awareness of pork's health benefits.

Derek's career in advertising began at Periscope, where they worked as an Associate Media Planner and then as a Media Planner, leading media strategy, planning, buying, and reporting for various B2B and B2C clients. Derek worked on accounts such as BASF, Bridgestone, Arctic Cat Snowmobiles, and UnitedHealthcare.

At Martin Williams Advertising, Derek held multiple roles, including Media Planner, Account Manager, and Associate Account Supervisor. Derek led cross-channel media strategy and planning efforts, managed relationships with media vendors, and oversaw budgets for projects. Derek'sclients included Syngenta Crop Protection and Kubota Tractor Corp.

Derek then joined Bader Rutter as a Senior Account Executive, where they served as the primary client contact and led production and planning projects for Corteva Agriscience. Derek managed budgets and collaborated with cross-functional teams.

Currently, Derek is working at Barkley as a Senior Media Planner, leading media strategy and tactical plan development for multiple agency accounts across various consumer categories. Derek'sclients include Barkley, Elanco Animal Health, Dairy Farmers of America, E-Z-GO Golf Carts, TruMoo, and The Salvation Army. Derek is also involved in new business pitches.

Derek Nystrom attended Drake University from 2013 to 2017. During this time, they pursued two Bachelor's Degrees - one in Advertising and the other in Public Relations/Image Management.
