David van Zijl

Principal Engineer at Beacon

David van Zijl has worked in a variety of roles since 1999. Their first job was as a Software Engineer at Evolve Interactive, where they worked with Perl, C++, and SQL (PostgreSQL) on Red Hat Linux for various client websites. David then moved to Alchemy Worx Ltd, where they worked with Perl, PHP, and SQL (MySQL) for company and client websites on Red Hat Linux. In 2001, they took a role at the BBC as a Software Engineer for Perl, then moved up to become a Support Team Lead for Documentum and a Software Engineer for Interactive TV. From 2012-2015, they worked as a Senior Software Engineer at Solnet Solutions, where they were the tech lead for a Java EE core business application migration project, and identified major inefficiencies in one product. From 2015-2018, they worked at Elsevier as a Principal Developer, where they were the team lead for a back-end services team. Finally, in 2021, they took a role as a Principal Engineer at Beacon.

David van Zijl obtained a B.Sc. in Computer Science and Information Systems from the University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika between 1999 and 2005. Prior to this, they attended Grey College between 1990 and 1994. David has also obtained several certifications, including Oracle Certified Associate (OCA), Java SE 7 Programmer from Oracle in February 2013, Red Hat Certified Engineer from Red Hat, Inc. in December 2012, IBM Certified System Administrator - WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V7.0 from IBM, and IBM Certified System Administrator - WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V8.0 from IBM.
