Katie Gillard began their work experience in 1999 as a Visual Arts Teacher for the Beaverton School District. In 2000, they took on the role of Advocacy Chair for the Oregon Art Education Association. In 2019, they served as a Summer Teaching Fellow at the Portland Art Museum. From 2013 to 2019, they worked as a Teacher Consultant and Teaching Artist at the University of Oregon. Katie also worked for the International Baccalaureate as a Reviewer for BQC from 2016 to 2017. From 2013 to 2016, they served as an Art Education Consultant at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. Additionally, they worked as a Visual Arts Teacher at Cedar Park Middle School from 2012 to 2015. In 2014, they were an Adjunct Instructor at the Arts and Administration Program, School of Architecture and Allied Arts. Lastly, they worked as a Visual Arts Teacher and Department Head at the International School of Beaverton from 2006 to 2012.
Katie Gillard obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Art & Art Education from Saint Mary's College between 1993 and 1998. Katie then pursued a Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree in Art & Liberal Studies at Lewis & Clark College from 2001 to 2004. After completing their formal education, they gained additional certifications, including the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, and Diploma Programme Visual Arts Certified Teacher from The International Baccalaureate in January 2005. Katie also holds a K-12 Standard Art Certification for Oregon from the Teachers Standards and Practices for Oregon, although the specific dates of obtaining this certification are not provided.
