Alex Downs

Alex Downs is a Senior Engineer at BD, having joined the company in October 2023. Prior experience includes serving as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Sandia National Laboratories, where Alex led research into the stability of electrochemical aptamer-based sensors. As an NSF Graduate Research Fellow at Plaxco Laboratory and Pennathur Laboratory, Alex focused on enhancing EAB sensors, exploring DNA hybridization, and developing microfluidic devices. An earlier role as an Undergraduate Student Researcher at Vandiver Laboratory involved work on paper microfluidics and characterization of uranium glass. Alex holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from UC Santa Barbara and a B.S. in Biosystems Engineering with a minor in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Arizona.
