Jim McMillan has an extensive work experience spanning over 30 years. Jim began their career in 1989 with the United States Air Force as a COMSEC/Communications, where they were responsible for implementing and managing secure communications, networks, and systems. In 1996, they moved to the ND Office of Attorney General as a Network Manager, where they were responsible for various tasks implementing and managing technology and security for agency networks and systems. In 2001, they were hired as a Senior Information Security Administrator at Basin Electric Power Cooperative, where they were responsible for the selection, implementation, and management of security controls and processes. In 2011, they moved to Bank of North Dakota as Information Security Program Manager, where they were responsible for the development, implementation and management of a corporate Information Security Program. In 2013, they joined MDU Resources Group, Inc. as Manager of Cyber Security, where they were responsible for all cyber security efforts across all corporate systems and networks. In 2016, they became the Principal Consultant at CYBERNET SECURITY LLC, and in 2021 they joined BEK Communications as Senior Manager Cyber Security Operations.
Jim McMillan holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Minot State University, as well as two Master's degrees from the University of Mary in Business Administration and Information Technology Management. Jim also has several certifications, including Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) from ISACA (2008), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) from (ISC)² (2001), GIAC Critical Controls Certification (GCCC) from GIAC Certifications (2017), GIAC Penetration Tester (GPEN) from GIAC (2008), GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA) from GIAC (2006), GIAC Certified Intrusion Analyst (GCIA) from GIAC (2010), GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH) from GIAC (2005), GIAC Security Essentials Certification (GSEC) from GIAC (2001), and GIAC Security Leadership (GSLC) from GIAC (2008).
