Brenda B. Spriggs

Brenda B. Spriggs, MD, FACP, has a diverse background in medicine, nonprofit initiatives, education, consulting and real estate development. Her medical career spans 25 years of operating a consultative rheumatology/immunology practice and teaching at Children’s Hospital, San Francisco, and at the University of California at San Francisco, where she has been a Full Clinical Professor of Medicine since 1991.

Currently, she manages the “W” Group, LLC, a real estate development and investment company. In addition, she is involved in restoring historic 19th century landmark properties in San Francisco.

Dr. Spriggs became an NIH Fellow in Rheumatology at the University of California in 1972. She joined the faculty as a Clinical Instructor and served as medical coordinator for the Regional Program for Arthritis. She established her private rheumatology practice in 1976 at Children’s Hospital, serving as Chief of Rheumatology until 1994, serving on professional boards and scientific committees until 1997, mentoring future rheumatologists and receiving numerous teaching and recognition awards.

She has lectured extensively, authored and presented scientific and clinical papers and submitted clinical case histories to her specialty society. During the 1990s, she led Children’s Physician Associates, Inc., and California Pacific Medical Associates, Inc., through the new frontier of adaptation to managed care and mergers.

Dr. Spriggs has served on many nonprofit boards including: the Arthritis Foundation of Northern California; Providence Hospital (Sisters of Charity), Oakland; Board of Trustees, Children’s Hospital, San Francisco; and the Drew College Preparatory School Board of Trustees. Her international commitments include: International League Against Rheumatism in Sydney, Australia, 1985; Citizen Ambassador for the Gore/Mbeke Initiative for Education, Science and Technology in South Africa, 1995; and the Global Strategies Program at Templeton College, University of Oxford, England, 2003. She is a member of the Emeritus Board of the Alta Bates Summit Foundation and the Women’s Foundation of California.

Her honors include the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor society, Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, and Mortar Board Gold Key Honor Society. She holds membership in the American College of Healthcare Executives and is a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Diplomate of the American College of Physicians and a member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

Dr. Spriggs earned a Bachelor of Science from Fisk University, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude, an MD from Meharry Medical College, an EMPH for healthcare executives from the University of California Los Angeles and an MBA from the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management.
