Joachim Michael Matz is a Research Group Leader at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine since May 2022, focusing on the digestive vacuole physiology of Plasmodium falciparum. Prior experience includes roles as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for Structural Systems Biology, where research concentrated on heme polymerization in Plasmodium falciparum, and at The Francis Crick Institute, where work involved heme polymerization and proteins of the Plasmodium–erythrocyte interface. Matz also contributed to research on metabolic host-parasite interactions and RNA-binding proteins during a postdoctoral tenure at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Early career development included a PhD at both Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology and Radboudumc, focusing on mitochondrial membrane proteins, functional characterization of the Plasmodium mitochondrion, and experimental genetics of Plasmodium berghei. Matz holds a Master of Science in Molecular Life Science from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Freie Universität Berlin.
