Keith Matthews

General Counsel at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Keith Matthews manages the foundation’s legal team and oversees a broad range of legal, transactional, policy, operational, and programmatic matters that affect the foundation and its subsidiaries and their ability to achieve their respective missions.

Keith serves on the board of Bill & Melinda Gates Agricultural Innovations, a foundation subsidiary that focuses on developing agricultural technologies and innovations. He also serves on the investment committees of the foundation’s Strategic Investment Fund and the Innovative Financial Instruments team.

Before Keith joined the foundation, his legal work focused on corporate transactions and governance matters. He counseled private equity investors on a wide range of transactions, including growth equity and venture capital investments and mergers and acquisitions. Over the course of his career, he was seconded to the African Development Bank in Tunisia, where he represented the bank in public and private financings in sub-Saharan Africa, and he worked in Singapore as a lawyer focused on project financings. Keith has also worked as a management consultant and a commercial banker based in New York.

Keith has a B.S. in finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from the University of Michigan.
