Umar Farooq

Umar Farooq is an experienced investigative data reporter currently with Bloomberg Industry Group since March 2024. Prior roles include serving as an Ancil Payne Fellow at ProPublica, focusing on issues such as arms exports and police accountability, and as a correspondent for Al Jazeera Media Network, where coverage included significant events like the Russian invasion of Ukraine and regional economics. Additional experience includes producing the OnSpec Podcast, reporting for Thomson Reuters on Afghanistan and Pakistan, and serving as a special correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, where major stories encompassed the war in Syria and the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. Farooq has also freelanced for numerous prominent publications and completed internships with organizations like the New America Foundation and Human Rights Watch. An academic background includes a Master’s degree in Applied Physics from The Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor's degree in Physics and Computer Engineering from Tulane University.
