Bona Opera Studios
We're Bona Opera Studios, and we're tackling one of early childhood education's biggest challenges: bridging the gap between hands-on, developmentally appropriate learning and 21st-century computational thinking skills. The Problem: Parents increasingly ask Montessori directors, "How does this beautiful, concrete learning actually prepare my child for STEM careers?" Meanwhile, educators struggle to introduce technology concepts without compromising their child-centered, screen-free philosophies. Our Solution: BonaBlocks—a tangible programming system designed specifically for children ages 3-5 that makes computational thinking as concrete and manipulable as traditional Montessori materials. Why This Matters: Research from Harvard, MIT, and leading developmental psychologists shows that early positive experiences with technology creation (not consumption) significantly impact children's future STEM engagement. When 4-6 year olds work with physical programming materials, we see 90% voluntary participation and sustained 15-minute work cycles that align perfectly with natural learning rhythms. What Makes BonaBlocks Different: Instead of screens and abstract coding, children build working programs by connecting physical blocks—just like the beloved manipulatives they already know. They create cars that respond to touch, lights that flash when they clap, and complex interactive systems that demonstrate cause-and-effect relationships through play. Our Approach: We're taking an evidence-based path, conducting systematic research with Montessori educators to ensure authentic classroom fit. Because the best educational technology doesn't replace good teaching—it enhances it. The Impact: BonaBlocks addresses educational equity by ensuring all children develop positive relationships with technology while building executive function skills, logical reasoning, and systematic problem-solving that transfer directly to mathematics, science, and beyond.
