Tanglewood Learning Institute Director at Boston Symphony Orchestra

Sue Elliott is the Director of the Tanglewood Learning Institute at the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Sue has been with the BSO since August 2018 and in their current role since January 2022.

Elliott was recruited to lead the BSO’s expansion of the Tanglewood facilities and programs, transforming it from a summer festival to a year-round cultural destination. Sue has provided critical support for the BSO during the pandemic, helping to transition the organization's programming to online and hybrid formats.

Under Elliott's leadership, the Tanglewood Learning Institute has established collaborations with local, national, and international partners, including the Martha Graham Dance Company, the Lobkowicz Collections, Mass Cultural Council, Jacob’s Pillow, Norman Rockwell Museum, Berkshire International Film Festival, and IS183 Art School of the Berkshires. In its first 24 months, the institute opened the new Linde Center for Music and Learning, provided ad hoc leadership of implementation team for the BSO’s first online streaming platform, and designed and produced 15 program series with more than 200 in-person and online events featuring a diverse line-up of musicians, artists, scholars, and speakers that garnered national press coverage.

Sue Elliott has a Master of Music from the University of Southern California, where they studied clarinet performance. Sue also has an Artist Diploma from the University of Toronto in clarinet performance, and a Bachelor of Music Performance from McGill University. Sue has a certificate in Non-Profit Leadership from the National Guild for Community Arts Education, and a certification from the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business in Digital Transformation: Leading People, Data, and Technology.

Their manager is Gail Samuel, President and Chief Executive Officer. They work with Joan Jolley - Director of Corporate Partnerships, Kathleen Sambuco - Director of Human Resources, and Dennis Alves - Director of Artistic Planning.
