Breakthrough Central Texas
Tomas Garza is a seasoned professional in student support and higher education services, currently serving as the Student Advising & Program Coordinator at Breakthrough Central Texas since December 2020, focusing on assisting first-generation high school students in Manor ISD with post-secondary education barriers. Previous roles include Success Coach at St. Edward's University, where Tomas provided academic advising to freshmen, and Financial Aid Officer at The University of Texas at Austin, delivering financial aid counseling to students. Additional experience encompasses captioning services at The University of Texas at San Antonio, admissions support at the University of the Incarnate Word, and various positions that involved resident assistance, marketing, and orientation leadership. Tomas holds a Master of Education in Student Services in Higher Education from the University of the Incarnate Word and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from The University of Texas at San Antonio.

In Central Texas, only 8% of middle school students from low-income communities will go on to earn a college degree. To combat this inequity, Breakthrough makes a 12-year commitment to help children become the first in their families to graduate from college. Our program focuses on a combination of extended learning, comprehensive advising, and leadership experiences to help students prepare for, persist through, and ultimately, graduate from college. From middle school to high school to college through college graduation, we are there every step of the way. In 2018, Breakthrough will serve more than 1,650 students in Central Texas.
