Mariano Berkenwald

Senior Associate, Europe at Breakthrough Energy

Mariano joined Breakthrough Energy’s as Europe team as Senior Associate in May 2022. He supports the teams sectoral work across the continent, and leads the work on low-carbon fuels for aviation and shipping.

Before joining Breakthrough Energy, Mariano worked for six years at the International Energy Agency’s Office for Global Energy Relations, where he coordinated the IEA’s work with governments, companies, and civil society to accelerate Latin America’s clean energy transitions. His work covered a range of clean energy topics, including low-carbon hydrogen, system integration of renewables, demand side management, power market design and carbon markets. In this position, he acted as a bridge between industrialized and emerging economies and developed a global understanding of clean energy topics from a technical, policy, financial and geopolitical perspective. More recently, Mariano worked as a strategy consultant on clean energy tech and ESG for companies and investors in Latin America and Europe, helping design net-zero emissions strategies for companies and investment portfolios.

Mariano is from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and lives in Paris since 2013. He has an M.Sc in Energy Economics and Management from IFP School and is a Chemical Engineer from Chimie ParisTech. Mariano speaks fluent Spanish, English, French and Portuguese. In his free time, Mariano can be found at the gym or on sunny Parisian terraces. He’s an avid traveler, and is only three countries short from his goal of visiting every country in the EU!
