Toby Boatman

Toby Boatman has worked in various roles in the field of research since 2011. In 2011, they were a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Essex, where they assisted academic staff with planning undergraduate field/laboratory-based practical modules and supervised students during field and laboratory data collection. Toby was also a Masters Project Co-Supervisor, securing departmental funding for a 12-week master's research project. In 2015, they joined Chelsea Technologies Group Ltd as a Research Scientist and Graduate Research Fellow. Toby's work there included investigating the relationship of algal fluorescence and functional PSII reaction centers calculated from O2 flash yields, as well as investigating the relationship between PSII electron transport rates (ETR) and gross O2 evolution across a range of algal groups. In 2018, they moved to Imperial College London as a Postdoctoral Research Associate, working in the Department of Chemical Engineering on PHOTOFUEL, an EU Horizons 2020 project. Toby's most recent role is Research Director at Brilliant Planet, where they are unlocking the power of algae as an affordable method of permanently and quantifiably sequestering carbon at the gigaton scale.

Toby Boatman obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Marine and Freshwater Biology from University of Essex in 2010. Toby then went on to earn a Master's Degree in Marine Biology from the same institution in 2011. In 2015, they completed their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Marine Biology (Oceanography) from University of Essex. Additionally, Toby Boatman holds certifications in Advanced Diver and Open Water from PADI.
