James Hart is a seasoned legal professional with significant experience in both public service and private practice. Currently serving as a Deputy Attorney General at the California Department of Justice since 2012, James has been involved in high-stakes arbitration and negotiations, notably securing multi-billion dollar settlements concerning the tobacco Master Settlement Agreement, as well as handling appellate matters in the 9th Circuit. Prior to this role, James worked as a Senior Associate in Litigation at Mayer Brown, where representation included major airlines in post-September 11th personal injury cases and constitutional challenges for internet retailers. James began a legal career as a Graduate Fellow with the Public Interest Law Initiative and also served as a Tax Research Assistant for the Minnesota Department of Revenue. James holds a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from Macalester College.
