Adam Ashton serves as the Deputy News Editor at CalMatters since February 2023, focusing on criminal justice, health care, and mental health issues in California. Previously, Adam held several positions at The Sacramento Bee, including Assistant Managing Editor, where leadership over 15 reporters and editors involved extensive coverage of public safety and education, and Capitol Bureau Chief, overseeing a team researching state and federal matters. Adam's career also includes military reporting for The News Tribune, foreign assignments with McClatchy, and editorial roles at The Modesto Bee and Merced Sun-Star. Adam began in journalism with The Associated Press and holds a BA in English and Geography from San Francisco State University.
