Ed Samulski

Advisor & Co-Founder at Carbon

Ed Samulski is a polymer chemist and the Cary Boshamer Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ed is also an advisor and co-founder at Carbon. Samulski's research focuses on high performance polymers and composites with an emphasis on liquid crystalline thermosets.

Samulski began their career as a professor at the University of Connecticut, where they taught and conducted research in polymer physical chemistry from 1972 to 1987. Ed then spent a year as an EFRC Senior Research Fellow and visiting professor at the University of Cambridge, researching polymer dynamics with Sir Sam Edwards at the Cavendish Laboratory.

In 1988, Samulski joined the faculty at UNC Chapel Hill, where they have been a Cary Boshamer Professor of Chemistry since 2004. Ed co-founded Liquidia Technologies in 2004, where they served as CEO until 2017. Ed then co-founded Allotropica Technologies and BlueSky Polymers before joining Carbon as an advisor and co-founder.

Ed Samulski earned their Bachelor of Science in Textile Chemistry from Clemson University. Ed then went on to earn their PhD in Chemistry with a focus on liquid crystalline polymers from Princeton University under the advisement of Arthur Tobolsky. After graduation, Samulski completed two postdoctoral research programs; the first in physical chemistry with Chas. G. Wade at The University of Texas at Austin and the second in biophysical chemistry with Herman J. C. Berendsen at the University of Groningen.
