Alon Lavie

Alon Lavie currently serves as the VP of AI Research at Phrase, a position held since August 2023. Lavie has an extensive academic background at Carnegie Mellon University, where involvement spans from Research Assistant/Ph.D. Student in the late 1980s to various professorial roles since 1996, including Consulting Professor (Adjunct), Research Professor, Associate Research Professor, and Assistant Research Professor. Prior roles include VP of Language Technologies at Unbabel from May 2019 to June 2023, and Machine Translation Group Manager at Amazon from July 2015 to March 2019, following the acquisition of Safaba Translation Solutions, where Lavie was a co-founder, Chairman, President, and CTO from July 2009 to June 2015. Initial experience includes a role as a Member of Technical Staff in the NLP Group at IBM Research Center in Haifa, Israel, in early 1989. Academic qualifications include a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University (1989-1995) and a combined BA and MS in Computer Science from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (1983-1988).
