Sonia Cardenas is an experienced program manager and recruitment specialist currently working at CASA of San Mateo County since November 2018, where responsibilities include developing recruitment strategies targeting diverse community members. Previously, Sonia held the position of Front Desk Lead at Sterling Court: Assisted and Independent Living, overseeing office operations and collaborating with management on policy updates. Earlier roles include serving as a Student Caller and Student Lead at Tower Foundation of SJSU, and tutoring in reading and mathematics for Unitarian Universalists of San Mateo. Sonia holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Justice Studies from San Jose State University.

Court Appointed Special Advocates - CASA of San Mateo County empowers YOU to make a difference in the life of a child who has been abused or neglected. What We do: CASA of San Mateo County recruits, trains, and supports adult volunteers as a powerful voice for the best interest of abused and neglected children who have come under the court’s protection because their parents can’t or won’t take care of them. What CASA Volunteers do: They listen first. Then they act. Volunteers devote 2-4 hours a week getting to know the child by talking with everyone in that child's life: parents and relatives, foster parents, teachers, medical professionals, attorneys, social workers and others. They use the information they gather to inform judges and others of what the child needs and what will be the best permanent home for them. They provide consistent, caring support and make sure the child doesn't get lost in the system. For many children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence in their lives. For many volunteers, CASA is a life-changing experience that makes a difference in our community. With just a few hours a week, you can make a lifetime of impact for a child in foster care.
