Jennifer is a marine phycologist (“phykos” = algae/seaweed: “-logy” = the study of) with 9+ years of seaweed cultivation and physiology experience. Originally from Vancouver, Jennifer travelled to Australia and received her PhD in marine biology with her research focus on climate change effects (global warming) on different life stages of seaweeds. Being lured back by the beautiful seaweeds of PNW, Jennifer returned to her hometown to undertake a postdoctoral research position at the University of British Columbia and Hakai Institute studying local species of seaweed Nori and partnered with local First Nation communities. Here, she learned the importance of coastal foods and the nutritional and health benefits of seaweeds. Jennifer is passionate about seaweeds as they are a renewable and nutritional food source, beneficial in their effects of reducing carbon emissions and vital in maintaining healthy coastal ecosystems.
