Steve Martin

Strategic Advisor at Cascadia Seaweed

Dr. Martin is a Sport and Exercise Medical Practitioner who graduated from McMaster University in 1987 with a doctorate in medicine. Prior to this he attended both Undergraduate and Graduate programs in Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo and Simon Fraser University. In graduate school he studied Environmental physiology with a focus on human function in adverse environments.

He hold a Certificate of Competency in Sports and Exercise Medicine through the Canadian College of Family Physician (CCFP-SEM) and is a member of the Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine. In addition, he has a Master’s degree from McGill in Occupational Health and is a Fellow of the Board of Occupational Medicine of Canada. Dr. Martin has a certificate in Medical Education from the Centre of Medical Education, University of Dundee, Scotland.

Dr. Martin is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, UBC. He spent 12 years as Course Director for the Island Medical Programme (UBC Medical School) for Clinical Skills. In addition he is Affiliate Associate Professor in the Division of Medical Sciences and Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Exercise Sciences, Physical and Health Education, Faculty of Education (graduate and undergraduate studies) at the University of Victoria. His current research project is a part of an International Study on the Long-term effects of concussion.

Dr. Martin currently provides service as the Sport Medicine Physician to the University of Victoria Varsity athletics in the Varsity Injury Clinic. He has worked with multiple local community teams, provincial and nationals teams, most recently Hockey Canada and Rugby Canada. He been a core medical team member for a number of national and international multi-sport events. He sits as the CanWest Medical Representative to the USport Medical Committee. Dr. Martin views exercise as medicine and has a strong interest in nutrition as it affects human performance and health.
