Dean Dwonczyk

Group Chief Underwriting Officer at Catalina Re

Dean began his career as an actuary in Australia in the areas of non-life insurance and reinsurance actuarial consulting and structured finance.

He spent several years as a Principal for W M Mercer, providing claims reserving and premium rating advice to many of Australia’s largest insurers.

Dean moved to London in 1994 and spent several years in the structured finance operations of a number of investment banks including Hambros and Societe Generale, with a focus on structured tax based risk transfer transactions. This work included the development and arrangement of leveraged leases, cross-border leases, structured preference shares and contingent debt.

He has worked as a consulting actuary providing reinsurance structuring, modelling and arranging services to insurers and reinsurers. This work focused on the analysis of books of long-tail business and the development of reinsurance strategies to transfer risk and to act as an alternative to equity capital. Dean is particularly familiar with accident and health risks, employer’s liability and workers compensation business, professional liability business, residual value guarantee risk and trade credit and political risk classes.

Dean has worked with Chris Fagan since 2004 and is a main board Executive Director of Catalina. He has a degree in actuarial studies from Australia’s Macquarie University and is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary.
