Philipp Waldstein

Group Chief Investment Officer at Catalina Re

Philipp Waldstein serves as Group Chief Investment Officer responsible for all investment activities of the Catalina Group.

Philipp has over 30 years’ experience in the insurance asset management and banking industry. From 2013 he served as CIO and later CEO of MEAG, the € 297 billion asset manager for Munich Re Group. He has been heading all liquid portfolio management activities in Munich, New York and Hong Kong as well as the illiquid asset division. He served as Chairman of the board of both MEAG Munich ERGO Asset Management GmbH, as well as MEAG New York Inc. and MEAG Hong Kong Ltd.

Philipp has been a long standing member of the investment committee of the German Insurance Association (GDV) as well as member of the board of Deutsches Aktieninstitut (DAI), the central German stock market association.

Prior to Munich Re, Philipp held several senior positions in Unicredit Group. From 2006 to 2012 he was responsible for Group Strategic Portfolio & Funding, acting from the UniCredit Group holding in Milan and managing the structural liquidity of UniCredit Group throughout the financial crisis. In addition, he held the position of Vice Chairman of Unicredit International, Luxemburg.

From 2001 to 2005, Philipp was Head of Finance for HypoVereinsbank, the German entity of UniCredit Group. His responsibilities were centered on the management of the strategic participations, the pension book as well as the regulatory capital position.

From 1991 to 2001, Philipp held various positions within the markets division of Hypovereinsbank in Frankfurt and Munich. He became Head of the New Issue Bond Syndicate and subsequently Head of Capital Markets combining syndicate and coverage of a wide spectrum of international issuers. His responsibilities also included the setup of the international funding activities.

Philipp started in banking in 1984 doing an apprenticeship at a local branch and subsequently making his way into the equity trading department of Bayerische Vereinsbank. He holds a diploma in economics from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. Philipp is married since 1994 and has two twin sons.
