Roberto Vera Alvarez has been working in the field of bioinformatics since 2003. Roberto began their career as a Bioinformatics Specialist at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) where they worked on bioinformatic software development applied to drug design and data mining, as well as the design, implementation and administration of a Beowulf computer cluster. In 2006, they became an Adjunct Professor at the Technological University of Havana and in 2011, they were promoted to Assistant Professor. From 2012 to 2015, they held Research Fellow positions at both the International Centre from Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and the Laboratorio Nazionale del Consorzio Interuniversitario per le Biotecnologie. In 2015, they began working as a Computational Structural Biologist Specialist at both the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and Medical Science & Computing, LLC. In this role, they designed and implemented customized Bioinformatic tools using C++, Python, Java, and SQL, as well as annotated transcriptomes for NCBI BioProjects with poorly annotated RNA-Seq data. In 2020, they were promoted to Senior Biostatistician at National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and Medical Science & Computing, LLC, and in 2022, they were promoted to Senior Bioinformatics Scientist at Catalytic Data Science.
Roberto Vera Alvarez obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Bioinformatics from Pázmány Péter Catholic University between 2013 and 2014. Prior to that, they obtained a Physics Degree from the University of Havana between 1997 and 2003.
