Onyema Afulukwe has a diverse work experience in the legal field. Onyema began their career as a United Nations Monitor at the International Service for Human Rights in 2005. In 2007, they interned as a Legal Intern at Oxfam before starting their long tenure at the Center for Reproductive Rights. At the Center, they held various roles including Visiting Attorney, Legal Fellow, Legal Adviser for Africa, Senior Legal Adviser for Africa, and Senior Counsel for Africa. Currently, they hold the position of Associate Director for New Initiatives and Business Development.
Onyema Afulukwe's education history consists of three main academic pursuits. In 1996, they started their undergraduate studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where they pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in the field of Law. Onyema completed their undergraduate studies in 2001.
Following their LLB, Onyema enrolled at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in 2003 to pursue a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Public International Law. Onyema successfully completed this program after a year of studies in 2004.
Continuing their educational journey, Onyema undertook another LLM degree, this time focusing on Women's International Human Rights Law at the University of Toronto. Onyema commenced this program in 2006 and finished it in 2007.
In addition to their academic achievements, Onyema Afulukwe has obtained several certifications. In 2003, they received the Nigerian Bar certification from the Supreme Court of Nigeria, granted upon completing the necessary requirements. In 2006, they acquired the New York Bar certification from the New York State Unified Court System, qualifying him to practice law in the state of New York.
Moreover, in January 2022, Onyema obtained a certification titled "How to Speak So People Want to Listen" from LinkedIn, an online learning platform. This certification serves as additional professional development in the realm of effective communication.
