James Highlands has a diverse work experience in the maritime industry. James started their career as a 2nd Engineer at Dynatron marine services in 1989. James then worked as a Technical Director at Coastline Maritime Pte Ltd for 24 years, from 1995 to 2019. During this time, they gained expertise in technical aspects of maritime operations. In 2019, James Highlands joined Chantier Davie Canada Inc. as a Senior Engineer Manager, where they specialized in advanced propulsion and manoeuvring systems for shipbuilding. James was later promoted to the role of Director of Functional Engineering, responsible for designing and overseeing testing of marine apparatus and equipment.

James Highlands attended Warsash Maritime College from 1991 to 1995, where they obtained a HND degree in Marine Engineering.
