Erik Karrer

SVP, Drug Discovery at Character Bio

Erik Karrer has extensive work experience, beginning their career as a Research Assistant at UC Davis in 1989. Erik then worked as a Post-doctoral Fellow at CEPRAP and The Scripps Research Institute, where they focused on plant cell cDNA library development and HIV-related research. In 1999, Erik joined Maxygen, where they held various roles including Staff Scientist II, Staff Scientist III, Senior Scientist, and Director of Drug Discovery. Erik also led the Maxy-4 Project as the Project Leader. Erik then worked as the Senior Director of Molecular Biology and Drug Discovery at Perseid Therapeutics before joining Astellas Pharma as the Vice President of Molecular Biology and Discovery. In 2013, Erik became the Chief Scientific Officer at RuiYi Inc. and later moved to 23andMe as the Director of Drug Discovery and then as the Director of Target Discovery. Erik then joined Clover Therapeutics in 2020 as the VP of Drug Discovery. Currently, Erik holds the position of SVP of Drug Discovery at Character Biosciences, starting in December 2022.

Erik Karrer attended the University of California, Davis from 1984 to 1987, where they earned their Bachelor of Science degree in Genetics. Erik then continued their education at the same institution from 1987 to 1992, obtaining their Ph.D. in Genetics.
