Deland Chan

Deland Chan has a diverse work experience. Most recently, they served as the Director of Research at the Chinatown Community Development Center starting in 2023. Previously, from 2012 to 2022, they worked at Stanford University in various roles, including Researcher, Director of Community Engaged Learning, and Program Manager for Service Learning. From 2020-2022, they were a member of the Planning Commission at the City and County of San Francisco. Additionally, from 2014 to 2019, they were a Lecturer at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford. Their earliest work experience was at the Chinatown Community Development Center from 2009 to 2012, where they served as a Senior Planner, leading land use and transportation planning projects and co-founding the Chinatown Urban Institute.

Deland Chan holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Sustainable Urban Development from the University of Oxford. Deland also has a Master's degree in City Planning from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Sociology from Stanford University. Deland completed their Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Urban Studies with Honors, Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University as well. Deland attended The Dalton School for their early education. Deland has additional certifications including the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and LEED AP Neighborhood Development from the U.S. Green Building Council.
